Proverbs 22:1 (NIV) – a great name is better than great riches
Think back to any time you saw a stranger with a fancy car or a big house. Of course you admired it. Fancy cars are beautiful. Big houses are amazing. Do you remember the name of the person who owned them?
When I visited the French Riviera I saw lots of very wealthy people parking their yachts. I remember what the yachts looked like. However, I couldn’t tell you one detail about any of the people that owned them.
Let’s say you get that great car, house, or yacht. If you’re hoping people will admire you, it might work for people who are already on a first-name basis with you, I don’t know. For everyone else, they’ll just notice your stuff, but not remember you.
As for money in the bank, it’s just a number that says you probably made some good choices.
In the bible, a name can sometimes mean character. In Exodus 33:19, Yahweh describes his own character after Moses asks him to show His glory. He uses the word name very intentionally in the King James Version. The Hebrew word used there is shem (Hebrew: שֵׁם) can mean fame, reputation, or character.
With that in mind, instead of nice things which just distract people from remembering anything about you, or money in the bank which is useless to you after you die, aim for a great character. A great character is also a marker of having made great choices, and also tends towards prosperity, because who doesn’t want to work with a truly great person?
Hopefully one day I can be a great person, and so can you.
