I like video games. Most of us do.
Those of us who don’t usually have real-life feedback loops similar to what we seek in video games, albeit with a longer time horizon. In the end, I think that’s the goal – to know exactly what you need to do, and have a pretty good idea of how to do it. Then you can close the gap between where you are and where you want to be, so you can get the rewards and move on to the next challenge.
In any strategy or role playing game, we need resources. These resources are either constantly visible to us at the corner of our screen, or we can check them in a menu. Because these displays tell us accurately what we have and what we need, it gives us clear goals and assists us in winning the game.
An Unwinnable Game
Imagine every time you looked at your game resources, the game was lying to you. Well, more like overstating, or understating what you really have. Maybe it’s doing this by 4%, or it could be as much as sixty percent! What if the number changes every time you look at it?!
How effectively could you play the game then? Could you ever beat it? It throws your timing completely off. You waste resources attempting challenges you have no chance of winning. Your gameplay becomes at best a grind – to get a big enough margin of error in your resources – so that you can still win no matter how much your menu was lying to you. No fun.
When real life feels like that, honest video games start to feel more like a constitutional right than just a recreational activity.
